Our speakers, Lori Seraphino-Harper and Dave Ceglie, who were introduced by Henry Becker, represent Hotel Dieu Shaver, Audiology and Hearing Aid Clinic. David as Manager of Specialty Clinics and Lori as Senior Audiologist. Lori explained what they do in providing services to infants, children and adults as: assess hearing, provide hearing related information and aids for hearing. Lori discussed the complexity of the ear and hearing-related facts: two of particular interest to our group were: 30% of people over the age of 60 benefit from hearing aids and after 75 years our ability to rapidly and accurately process speech declines. She also pointed out a number of signs that we should look for to determine hearing loss and what steps can be taken to assess if hearing loss exists. Also pointed out were what steps can be taken to
help an individual with hearing loss.
There are a number of different types of hearing aids. We should understand that none will be perfect but making the right choice is important. Lori also discussed the other devices to aid in specific situations and how we can help in communicating with those who have hearing loss.
David explained that Hotel Dieu has been involved with audiology services since 1972 and has been a hearing aid clinic since 1998. There are virtually no waiting lists for adults and there are no direct charges for hearing tests and no doctor’s referral is required. David also discussed the funding and staff of their clinic.
