At our March meeting, Bill Brice spoke on the topic of Potash in Saskatchewan. Bill also showed a video called “It’s Our Land”, produced by Danielle Morandini, a young Niagara College student, focusing on the impact and some times conflicting interests of Saskatchewan residents/farmers and corporate interests in mining for potash in the province. It is clear the potash industry is huge for both the province and Canada overall. Canada has over 50% of the world’s know pot-ash reserves.

Potash (Sylvinite) consists of 45% KCI; 50% NaCI; and 50% Clay. At each potash mine, ore is mined at underground depths of 950 to 100 metres … twice as deep as the CN Tower is high. From the depths of the mines to farmers and fields around the world, these simple minerals help to grow food and economic opportunity for millions every day. Approximately 95% of world potash production is used in fertilizer.
